Breimann & Bruun Landschaftsarchitektur

Bundesgartenschau

Schwerin 2009

Federal Horticultural Show Schwerin (Germany)

The garden of 21st century

Breimann & Bruun were the masterplanners of the Bundesgartenschau (BUGA) in Schwerin. We isolated three areas crucial to the design; the entrance, the “swimming meadow”, and the palace lake. The foundation of the design was laid out. Maintaining an efficient cost balance, a total of 85.000 square meters were transformed into an elaborately designed, horticultural space. The garden of the 21st century was born.

The entrance

The entrance area totals about 30.000 square meters. Here the visitors will be embraced by the "Garden of colors" under a light canopy of 200 black Locust trees that create a peaceful lightning condition. You will observe the change in seasons captured by the monochromatic layout of thousands of blossoms, flowers and flowering shrubs. The entrance ends with an 80 m long section of white stairs ending at the waters edge. Here one can linger and enjoy a spectacular view across the lake to the castle of Schwerin.

The swimming meadow

One of the unique additions to Bundesgartenschau is the “swimming meadow”, placed like an island in front of the cities historical gates and baroque palace gardens. The “swimming meadow” is made to be a walk-able area. The material used here is dull glass made from the broken remains of green wine bottles. The area creates a prairie like scene. There is a labyrinth of about 30.000 square meters captivating one to enter. More than 80 tangerines- like relief’s traverse the entire area, making the "garden of grasses".

The visitor is surrounded by a sea of color: bronze, blue, rose, red and many shades of green. This planting is considered to be a modern interpretation of the pendent of Schwerin.

The enlargement of the castle lake

To create new space to encompass the swimming meadow installation the neglected castle lake was enlarged. The lake, that has become a rubbish dump, is now after the design of Breimann & Bruun one of the central elements of the Bundesgartenschau. This drastic change will forever be viewed and appreciated from visitors all around the world as an important part of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania capital.
